We’ve come a long way since making the first type of paper around 5-220 CE. Today, there’s a type of paper for every need: from wrapping gifts, writing notes, covering books, to making business cards, printing receipts, for construction, and even holding food.
Simple, versatile, and recyclable, there’s virtually nothing paper can’t do for mankind.
What You Didn’t Know about Paper
Although you’ll find the terms ‘parchment’ and ‘paper’ used interchangeably, they really shouldn’t be. Parchment is NOT paper. The difference is in the source – paper is made from plant-based fibers, whereas parchment is prepared from goat, calf, or sheep skin. Vellum on the other hand, is made from calf skin. The word came from the French term, ‘veau’.
For those who love reading Regency novels or historical fiction, you’ll find authors using ‘parchment’ when their characters need to write on something. While this is true to some extent, it’s rather absurd as actual parchment in those days was costly enough. Also, even the wealthy wouldn’t use it for frequent letter-writing.
Another thing you might find interesting is that papyrus isn’t technically paper, either. Ancient Egyptians would paste thinly-sliced papyrus plant strips together until it resembled a scroll or sheet, which is not how real paper is produced. Though one can say that papyrus is ‘paper-like’.
When paper was first invented during the Han dynasty, it was said that they used mulberry fibers with fishing nets, old rags, and hemp waste. The technique then spread to neighboring countries, such as Japan, Vietnam, and Korea. By the 8th century, paper-making reached the Islamic world.
Eventually, it made its way to Europe by the 11th century, where techniques were refined and wood-based materials were explored.
