The Discord logo is a stylized dialog cloud featuring the image of a game controller. The entire symbol is presented in a unique color called Blurple (hex code #5865F2).

According to Discord Inc., the logo was originally designed to resemble the head of the bot, Clyde. However, the symbol has come to represent different things, including a smiley face and even a crab.

From 2015 to 2021, the Discord logo is a well-known symbol for many online enthusiasts, especially those in the gaming community. What at first looks like a small crab inside a chat bubble is in fact, a game controller – in reference to Discord’s popularity with game servers.

In celebration of their 6th birthday however, the company decided to refresh its look in 2021. The logo itself now appears more rounded, and can display several “expressions.” The sharp “antennas” are revamped to a rectangular shape that can translate well onto different types of printed merch.

As for the font, Discord went for a custom version of the more playful font Ginto. This lively and spirited type appears in title case for the logo. Meanwhile, GG Sans is the font used inside Discord chatrooms.

More About Ginto Font

ginto-font

The Ginto font stands as a contemporary and minimalist font family that exudes an exquisite and stylish aura. Crafted by Seb McLauchlan, a graphic designer based in London, this font draws inspiration from sans-serif typefaces of the 20th century.

McLauchlan’s research delves into the evolution of typefaces during the phototypesetting era of the ’50s and ’60s, highlighting the transition from the stringent Modernist “purity” to the more elaborate and animated styles. This fusion of historical influences results in a vibrant and charismatic collection of forms known as ABC Ginto, which comprises two sister-families: Normal and Nord.

ABC Ginto Normal possesses a compact and poised demeanor, featuring a well-balanced range of weights from Thin to Black. This versatility allows the typeface to thrive in diverse sizes and settings. On the flip side, ABC Ginto Nord takes the essence of Normal and elevates it to new heights. It mirrors the structure of its sibling but amplifies the x-height and character width, presenting a broader visual spectrum.

Additionally, Nord expands its range with an array of weights, spanning from the delicate Hairline to the commanding Ultra Bold. This dynamic interplay between Normal and Nord results in a font family that effortlessly adapts to various design requirements and environments.

Aside from Discord, you’ve probably already seen this font used at MoMA New York, at the UDK Rundgang, Berlin, Winter Nights Festival, and at the Cinémathèque Design by Bureau Est.
