Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning dreamed of building fully-electric cars, based on an electric car experiment ran by General Motors from 1996-1999. They chose to name the company Tesla Motors in 2003, in honor of the late great 19th-Century inventor, Nikola Tesla.
Their first breakthrough product was the Roadster – an electric car that traveled up to 250 miles on a single battery. This was a feat at a time when batteries that could keep electric cars on the road for long periods. Elon Musk wouldn’t be joining the Tesla company until five years later.
The New Tesla
Elon Musk became the new face of Tesla Motors when he took over as CEO in 2008. In his leadership, he brought about several changes to Tesla Motors’ business model.
Its expansion beyond creating electric automobiles started when the company name was changed to “Tesla, Inc.” in 2017. Musk’s vision of the company included being a multi-sectoral energy solutions service. In 2019, their reported revenue was about US$24.578 billion.
