The Avengers are a team of superheroes appearing in comic books under Marvel Comics. Writer-editor Stan Lee and artist/co-plotter Jack Kirby assembled this team as a renovation of a previous superhero team named ‘All-Winners Squad’. Their debut issue was released in September 1963, where they carried the label ‘Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’.
The original team consisted of Iron Man, the Wasp, the Hulk, Thor, and Ant Man. Captain America joined their ranks in Issue #4. The comics have been known to have an ever-rotating roster, but kept the theme of fighting foes ‘no single superhero could withstand’. Humans, mutants, inhumans, androids, aliens, legendary beings, and even former villains have answered to the call of ‘Avengers, Assemble!’
The Avengers have grown beyond the realm of comic books, appearing in a wide variety of media such as movies, direct-to-video films and animated television series. They have also been central in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starting with the 2012 live-action film with the same name as the team.
