You may be aware of the games, the anime, the movies, the collectible figures or even, the trading cards. But revisiting the very beginnings of Pokemon can help you get an idea of what this craze is all about, and what it is now.
Pokemon is short for ‘Pocket Monsters’. It started as an arcade game in the 80s made by Satoshi Tajiri and Ken Sugimori. This game was presented to Nintendo, which at the start, didn’t get the idea of a game that lets you travel a world to catch and collect monsters to battle with other characters’ creatures. It’s first idea of a social aspect was that players can trade with each other to complete their collection.
The adventuring aspect of Pokemon caught on with the world, which brought ideas outside of the gaming sphere. It went on to not only become one of the largest gaming franchises in the world, but also a pop culture icon on its own merit.
