Nintendo’s first foray into the video game industry started in 1972. They have been making light gun accessories for the first commercially-available video game console, The Magnavox Odyssey. Nintendo had similar offerings in the Japanese market, so it was not a problem to produce their own line of optoelectronic toys.
Nintendo and Console Gaming
The new market opened to them when they have seen video game consoles as a lucrative business despite the machines being a rarity at the time. Their first attempt at their own machines was a joint project with Mitsubishi Electric: the ‘Color TV Game Machine’.
Nintendo’s video game division began developing their own titles in the 1980s, starting with Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. This proved to be their springboard for future original titles, as well as the development of more original Nintendo gaming consoles. The latest culmination of these technologies is the home console and handheld hybrid: Nintendo Switch.
