15 Slick and Modern Helvetica Alternatives
What is Helvetica?
Inspired by the 1896 typeface named Akzidenz-Grotesk which was popular in Switzerland in the early 1900s, Helvetica is a grotesque sans serif that was created in the 1950s and gained the Helvetica name 10 years later. As one of the most popular fonts in the world, it is almost a given that companies and brands across the globe will use or have used Helvetica at some stage.
Below, we have a selection of 15 viable Helvetica alternatives for you, just in case you want to liven up your design or projects.
Who Created Helvetica?
Helvetica was created in 1959 by Armin Hofmann, a Swiss president of a typeface foundry. Sales of their sans serif ‘grotesk’ typefaces were falling, and it was clear that the foundry’s classic designs were struggling to compete with their competitors’ offerings, such as the Berthold type foundry’s Akzidenz-Grotesk typeface. As a result, he created a typeface of his own, the Helvetica typeface, and it has been a leading typeface in business and branding ever since.
