Known for being the first style or type of sans-serif font, grotesque appeared in the early 1800s. It was named grotesque due to its slightly unusual appearance and form.
For over 200 years, it has been one of the most important/commonly used font types across business, promotion, and branding. Below, we have a collection of over 30 grotesque-style fonts that are easy to use and make your project or brand stand out from the thousands of others using free or mundane font types.
Each of the typefaces below comes in a convenient package, are all accessible through OpenType programs, are legible, has ligatures and alternates included for added customization, and look outstanding on posters, flyers, movie covers, book covers, headings, subheadings, regular text, or media design.
You could even use the unusual and unpredictable grotesque style to add a bit of mystery to a logo or some apparel.
What makes a font grotesque in the first place?
The very term grotesque is derived from the Italian word ‘grotteschi’, which refers to grottos where many decorations were found. To that end, grotesque refers, in part, to a decorative font. The other side of the coin is the obvious, the word ‘grotesque’ itself conjures up images of something unusual, something strange. Now, while the fonts you see below are not strange, they have a unique element to them that some might claim to be unusual. In any case, we are sure that any of the fonts below will take your branding or projects to the next level.
Is Arial a Groteaque font?

What does a grotesque font look like?
Most grotesque fonts are what is known as ‘geometric‘ in design. They will have a simple and well-organized letterform and are ideal for use as display type. Now you might be asking what ‘geometric‘ means, and you will be seeing a lot of it throughout this article, so let us explain:
Geometric design is almost always based on sans-serif letterforms, and its construction is made up of circles, triangles, and straight lines. The construction is simple, and these shapes make up the core of the geometric grotesque font design.
