Elden Ring Font and Logo

Elden-Ring logo

Elden Ring logo’s appearance is reminiscent of the many fascinating sceneries in the action role-playing game. You’ll instantly identify with the emblem even if you’ve only played the game once. The logo sports two basic features – the name of the game and a sky-like phenomenon.

The wordmark is rendered in ALL-CAPS and placed right above what looks like a raging whirlwind or stylized pentagram. Both elements are executed in gold and set against a dark sky background. The golden color and sky background give the emblem an elegant yet mysterious appearance.

In most versions of the logo, you’ll also spot what looks like a troubled ocean with a demon-like figure attempting to sink his sword into the waters as if to pierce something.

One of the things that make the Elden Ring logo so legible is the font used. The action role-playing game uses a font known as Mantinia.

About Mantinia

mantinia-sample1

Mantinia is a display and titling typeface created by renowned font designer Matthew Carter Mantinia. Carter designed Mantinia as a complementary font to his earlier typeface – Galliard.

Mantinia was created based on inspiration from the writings of famous Italian renaissance printmaker and painter Andrea Mantegna. Mantegna is noted for playing a significant role in reviving ancient Roman inscriptions, particularly stone-carved writings.

Mantinia Features

Mantinia is an ALL-CAPITAL typeface. The font is also available only in the Regular weight. These may sound like a deal-breaker to graphic designers who prefer to experiment with a wide range of design elements. However, Matthew Carter was cognizant of these potential limitations and ensured he developed a few more quirky characters.

For instance, Mantinia comes with a set of LARGE and small capitals. It also has unusual ligatures that add to its overall exquisiteness. These features are very reminiscent of Andrea Mantegna’s stone-cutting techniques.

Besides, you get to experiment with a slew of special characters. These include letterlike symbols, currency signs (such as the dollar, euro, and yen), integers, and basic punctuations.

Mantinia has a total of 245 glyphs and 1000 units per EM. The font also has 976 ascenders and -342 descenders. Its maximum advance height is 1318 while the maximum advance width is 1629.

Besides, Mantinia has no kerning (spacing between letters). Therefore, characters executed in this font are highly compact and more legible. Last but not least, Mantinia is incredibly scalable. That means the font preserves its quality regardless of the size used.

Mantinia Applications

Mantinia is essentially a display and titling typeface. In simpler terms, the font is best suited for headings, subheadings, keywords, and other areas of significant focus on a document or logo.

As a display font, you can use Mantinia for your company logos, store signage, and even road signage. The font’s elegance and striking features will make it stand out on any design projects you apply it on. Other popular display areas where you can deploy Mantinia include flyers, posters, and billboard advertisements.

And as a titling font, Mantinia will serve you best when used for headings, subheadings, and key phrases in a document. That includes both digital and physical publications. You could also consider Mantinia as the primary title font for your upcoming novel, newspaper, magazine, movie, television show, or video game (as is the case with Elden Ring).

But here’s the thing – you can use Mantinia on virtually any graphic designs. Don’t feel restricted by the typeface’s primary applicability as a display and title font. Whether you’re looking for a font for homeware art, t-shirt branding, or jewelry engraving, it wouldn’t hurt to look in the direction of Mantinia.

However, note that Mantinia is only available free of charge for personal usage. To use the font for commercial purposes, you’d need to contact its designer, Carter & Cone.
