Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson’s brainchild was first published in 1974 by Tactical Studies Rules in 1974. Its gameplay was derived from tabletop miniatures games of the time. This game, now known to the world as Dungeons and Dragons or D&D, was commonly recognized as the start of modern role-playing games and the RPG industry.
How To Play
Players made their own characters to act and play, each with their own stats, skills, and quirks. These characters were to embark on adventures within a fantasy setting. The narrator, known as the Dungeon Master (DM), serves as the referee and also the overseer of the playing field. The DM also played the role of the world’s inhabitants with which the adventurer party interacted with.
Characters earn experience points to improve their traits by solving issues, engaging in battle with the dungeon world denizens, and exploration. Similar game systems were patterned after D&D’s successful formula, but the latter was recognized as the industry leader in role-playing games, even until today.
Dungeons and Dragons also became a TV series. To replicate the logo of the animated version, try the Masquerade font by Martin Wait or DnDC by Zentron.
